Destin Fishing
Good things come to those who bait!!
Destin is no longer considered, as it once was, a small fishing village! Destin contains the largest charter fishing fleet in the state of Florida and Destin is a community that embraces a love for fishing. Destin has been known as The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village since 1965 when Captain Reddin was participating in the eighth annual Destin Fishing Rodeo and was visited by Governor Brunson. Captain Reddin took the governor and his wife on a 15 minute fishing trip and returned with a 15 pound Mackerel! When the governor returned to Tallahassee, he was asked during a television interview if it was unusual for someone to catch a fish that big. Governor Brunson replied, “Not if you fish in Destin, those people live with the fish, it has to be The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village!” This has remained Destin’s slogan ever since. The number of Fishing Rodeos and Tournaments held in Destin are endless, as are the amount of state and world records that have drawn crowds from miles around! Some of these prized catches include Cobia, Red Snapper, Flounder, Pompano, Grouper, Tuna, Amberjack and of course, the Blue Marlin.
It is a truly a sight to remember when the Charter Boats, or the Fishing Fleets from the Tournaments, make their way back through the Destin Pass as the sun sets behind them. The Captain and his crew proudly display, overlooking the breathtaking Destin Harbor, their prize of the day! Although many visit the Destin area and enjoy the weigh-in moments, nothing will ever compare to being a part of a day at sea in Destin.
One of the most renowned fishing experiences of a lifetime awaits you here! A Destin vacation is home to hundreds of professional charter boats. A fishing charter captain will take you on a guided trip that can satisfy anyone from a novice fisherman to an experienced angler. Regardless of your skill level as a fisherman, you can be satisfied in knowing your captain will provide you with the necessities to a bountiful day of casting. Destin offers 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 12 hour fishing trips! Many captains offer over night Destin fishing charters allowing you a couple of days of sport fishing. This is for the true die hard, as it is an experience you will never forget!! Whether you are looking for a small center console or a fishing yacht that is full of luxury, Chartering a boat in Destin, Florida is a must do!
Florida’s Choctawhatchee Bay is separated from the Gulf of Mexico and connects through Pensacola entering south Destin at the Pass. The Bay is forested by wetlands and characterized by marshes and also contains some of the best inshore fishing around! You will find our local shrimp boats out daily, oyster beds, and some of the biggest Blue Crabs around. Flats and fly fishing are also available in our expansive bay! Your catch for the day can be Snapper, Grouper, Redfish, Skip Jack and Speckled Trout!
You will also enjoy surf fishing from the shore or at one of our local’s favorite spots! The Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier which is a 1262-foot long pier is great to walk down just to see the local’s catch for the day and even better to fish from. Destin is complete with bait and tackle shops where you can find everything you and your family need for an exciting day of fishing our Emerald Green Waters! There are a several other spots located at the foot of the Mid-Bay Bridge and Gulf Shore Drive, just pass the Destin Pass that also have great fishing for Reds, Specks, and Bluefish! Located on your way out to the Destin Pass, from shore you may fish off the East Pass Channel Jetties. The jetties were built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1969 to protect the Gulf of Mexico’s shifting sands. The jetties are constructed with large boulders but fishing from this beautiful location in Destin brings Redfish, Mangrove Snapper, Bluefish, Sheeps head, Spanish Mackerel and Cobia.
If you haven’t experienced a day of fishing in Destin, with the industry that made Destin The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village, you need to! Destin promises you a truly exhilarating experience and holds a place on the list of most treasured memories for the whole family.
